Carpet Photography Specialist
Carpets, rugs, automotive interior textiles, industrial fabric samples — large flat surfaces that standard turntable + lighting setups can’t handle. PhotoRobot’s centerless turntable + raking-light + fast-spin capture pipeline is the solution. This specialty teaches how to shoot inspection-grade texture-revealing imagery for B2B + e-commerce + automotive + QC customers.
What you’ll learn
After completing the Carpet Photography Specialist package and passing the certification exam, you will be able to:
- Recognize when standard turntable + lighting workflows fail for large flat textile capture — size constraints, weight tolerances, texture-revealing light angles
- Operate PhotoRobot’s centerless turntable — architecture, fast non-stop spin vs stop-frame capture, weight + balance handling, camera positioning + framing for full-surface coverage
- Execute raking-light texture rendering — low-angle lighting that reveals pile direction, weave pattern, fiber character; color rendition discipline for wool / synthetic / blend materials
- Deliver for industry-specific contexts — e-commerce carpet retail, B2B wholesale catalogs, automotive interior sample documentation, industrial textile QC + production-run color proofing
- Handle pile-up effects + capture-time artifacts — diagnose problems specific to fast-spin large flat capture; recover or recapture as needed
- Manage strobe selection + power for fast-spin capture — sync, power, recovery time, color stability
This package is hands-on equipment intensive. You’ll work with PhotoRobot’s centerless turntable + raking-light kit — these are not skills you can build purely from textbook reading.
What’s included
The Carpet Photography Specialist package contains 3 modules plus an end-of-package certification exam.
Carpet track (SPCARP## namespace — all new in this package)
No reused modules — Carpet capture is a domain requiring specialty equipment + lighting discipline. SPCARP modules build the full pipeline from capture to delivery.
- SPCARP01 — Large Flat Surface Capture Challenges ✅ Live in v0.40.0. ~60 min. Why standard turntable + lighting doesn’t work for carpets; centerless turntable architecture; fast non-stop spin vs stop-frame capture tradeoffs; camera positioning + framing for full-surface coverage; resolution + zoom workflows for inspection-grade detail.
- SPCARP02 — Texture-Revealing Lighting ✅ Live in v0.40.0. ~90 min. Raking light (low-angle) for pile direction + texture; color rendition for fiber materials (wool / synthetic / blends / natural fibers); pile-up effects + avoidance in capture; strobe selection + power management for fast-spin; demonstrating depth + dimension (vs flat reproduction).
- SPCARP03 — Industry-Specific Delivery Patterns ✅ Live in v0.40.0. ~60 min. E-commerce carpet retail; B2B wholesale catalogs (carpet dealers + interior designers); automotive interior photography (carpet samples for car manufacturers); industrial textile QC documentation; color-accurate proofing for production runs.
Each module includes a textbook (reference reading), a workbook (exercises grounded in real carpet scenarios), and a knowledge check quiz.
How the package is delivered
Two delivery formats (online not offered — hands-on equipment work required):
At PhotoRobot studio (Klecany)
Group training in PhotoRobot’s training studio with centerless turntable rig. 2-day intensive with hands-on capture sessions on pre-prepared carpet samples (wool, synthetic, blend, automotive sample), raking-light setup practice, fast-spin vs stop-frame comparison, sample post-processing for different delivery contexts. PhotoRobot studio has centerless turntable + raking-light kit + post-production tooling pre-configured.
In your studio
PhotoRobot Certified Instructor travels to your team’s location. 2-3 days working with your actual carpet sample inventory + your installed centerless turntable + your customer’s delivery requirements. Best when carpet capture is a strategic capability you’re adding rather than one-time engagement. Requires verified centerless turntable installation on customer site before scheduling.
Online — not available
Carpet Photography Specialist is not available online. The capture skills (raking-light setup, fast-spin pile management, pile-up diagnosis, large-flat camera positioning) require live equipment work. Module textbooks are available as reference, but cert exam requires hands-on session completion verified by PhotoRobot Certified Instructor.
Certification
After completing all modules, students take the PhotoRobot Carpet Photography Specialist certification exam:
- 25 questions drawn from a pool weighted across the modules (SPCARP02 lighting carries more weight — densest module)
- 70 % pass threshold
- 45 minutes
- Scenario-heavy mix — most questions present a carpet capture situation and ask for the best decision (capture mode choice, lighting setup, delivery format choice, problem diagnosis)
- Hands-on completion required — cert exam is not standalone; student must complete instructor-verified hands-on session (Klecany or in-studio) before exam access
- Verifiable certificate — auto-generated PDF with QR code that resolves to a public verification page
- 2 years validity — refresh exam available before expiry to extend (~12 questions, 75 % pass, 25 min, extends by 2 years)
The Carpet Photography Specialist cert exam pool is LIVE in v0.40.0 at /quiz/certifications/carpet-specialist.html — 25 weighted questions. 70 % pass + hands-on completion = PhotoRobot Certified Carpet Photography Specialist credential.
Who should take it
The Carpet Photography Specialist package is for:
- PhotoRobot Certified Operators at studios serving carpet manufacturers, rug dealers, or related vertical
- Studios with PhotoRobot centerless turntable installed — the only studios that can practically apply this content
- Customer studio managers at carpet / rug / textile companies evaluating PhotoRobot for inspection-grade catalog
- Automotive supplier studios documenting interior textile samples for car manufacturer programs
- PhotoRobot internal staff delivering carpet-vertical engagements
It is not for:
- Studios without centerless turntable hardware (standard turntable workflows insufficient for large flat textiles)
- Operators without Operator Standard certification (foundational discipline required first)
- Customers in unrelated verticals where carpet capture is a one-off curiosity (custom engagement, not formal cert)
Prerequisites
Required:
- PhotoRobot Certified Operator (current, not lapsed) — capture-side fluency
Required (equipment):
- PhotoRobot centerless turntable installed in the studio where you’ll apply the cert. PhotoRobot Sales verifies installation before enrollment.
Helpful:
- Carpet / textile industry context (you’ve worked with carpet manufacturers, rug dealers, or automotive interior programs)
- Familiarity with carpet vocabulary (pile, weft, warp, weave, jacquard, tufted, fiber types) — even at the wiki-page level
- A live customer engagement where carpet capture would apply (training is most useful when grounded in a real upcoming project)
If you don’t yet have Operator Standard, complete that first. If your studio doesn’t have a centerless turntable, enrollment is gated until installation is verified — contact PhotoRobot sales to discuss centerless turntable options + bundled engagements.
Enrollment
This package is equipment-gated. PhotoRobot sales verifies your studio’s centerless turntable installation before issuing the voucher code. Each voucher is single-use, per-student.
For per-student pricing at Klecany, see the public sessions calendar. For custom on-site engagement pricing, contact PhotoRobot sales.
Customers without a centerless turntable installation: PhotoRobot sales can scope bundled engagements (centerless turntable hardware + installation + initial Carpet Photography Specialist training) for studios adding this capability. The cert track is a downstream credential; the hardware is the upstream gate.
After certification
The Carpet Photography Specialist credential opens:
- Production carpet capture project leadership at customer engagements — you’re equipped to own the inspection-grade catalog portion of a carpet / rug / textile customer’s documentation program
- Cross-vertical applications — carpet skills extend to large flat textiles (industrial fabric samples, automotive interior textiles, upholstery), automotive interior documentation programs, industrial QC photography
- PhotoRobot Certified Instructor (CI) path to deliver Carpet Photography Specialist training at your organization (once you have ~5+ production carpet projects shipped)
- PhotoRobot Partner Network listing as a certified Carpet Photography Specialist (highest-niche specialty — but strong customer demand signal in carpet vertical + automotive supplier programs)
The cert is the entry point. Real carpet specialty mastery comes from shipping 5-10 production projects across different fiber types + delivery contexts.
Module readiness
Tracking the current build state of each module in the package:
- ✅ SPCARP01 — Large Flat Surface Capture Challenges (new in v0.40.0)

- ✅ SPCARP03 — Industry-Specific Delivery Patterns (new in v0.40.0)
Carpet Photography Specialist is 3/3 modules ready + cert exam pool LIVE in v0.40.0 + refresh exam LIVE in v0.40.0. Fifth (and final) specialty cert track LIVE per v0.35.0 roadmap.
A note on the niche
Carpet Photography Specialist is the smallest-audience specialty in the Academy roadmap. The track exists because:
- Customers in carpet vertical genuinely need it. Standard product photography doesn’t work for large flat textiles; centerless turntable + raking light is the technical solution.
- Adjacent applications extend the audience. Automotive interior textile programs, industrial fabric QC, large upholstery samples all use similar capture discipline.
- No alternative exists. Without this specialty, carpet customers receive ad-hoc engagement quality; with it, repeatable expertise is encoded.
The Specialist role at a carpet-vertical studio is highly valued — small audience, high domain depth, strong customer dependence on quality.
A note on equipment gating
Carpet Photography Specialist is the second equipment-gated cert track in Academy (Virtual Catwalk, v0.39.0, is the first). Gating is intentional:
- No equipment = no delivery capability. A certified Specialist without a centerless turntable cannot execute carpet capture for customers.
- Sales coordination required. PhotoRobot sales verifies installation before voucher issuance.
- Bundled engagement option. Studios planning to add the capability can negotiate hardware + training as a package via sales.
For role-based gating (Operator, Studio Manager, Integrator) the foundational tracks; for equipment gating, the Virtual Catwalk + Carpet specialties.
A note on automotive interior textile customers
Many carpet specialists also serve automotive interior textile programs — capturing carpet samples + upholstery + headliner fabrics for car manufacturer documentation. The skills transfer directly:
- Centerless turntable handles large samples
- Raking light reveals texture + pile / weave detail
- Color accuracy critical for production proofing
- B2B catalog + sample-card delivery formats apply
If your customer base includes automotive textile suppliers, the Carpet Photography Specialist credential applies directly. Discuss with PhotoRobot sales for engagement scoping in this adjacent vertical.
